Maya Grandmothers and the traditional mayan healthcare

They have been to Centre Lothlorien several times before and will be here again in August. Maya Grandmothers Tomasa and Poxita. There are places in the world that are so remote, that the modern healthcare is not available. It is in these places that the traditional healthcare is very much alive. The wisdom of how to use nature as a source for medicine is passed on from generation to generation.

A little bit about maya grandmothers Tomasa and Poxita

Tomasa and Poxita, both grandmothers are mother and daughter and are the only practitioners in their surroundings. Often they treat people in their own house and even let the sick people stay in their own beds. With the support of Centre Lothlorien and earlier One Planet – One People festivals, Grandmother Tomasa has been able to realise her dream of creating her own holistic healthcare centre in in Chichicastanengo, Guatemala. You can read more about this centre in this article. https://www.centrelothlorien.com/het-ziekenhuis/. The Maya Grandmothers have visited Centre Lothlorien in 2018 and 2023. After the festival they will stay for another week to share a bit of their teachings with who-ever is interested.

What is traditional mayan healthcare

Traditional Mayan health teachings are based on 4 pillars: herbalism and massage techniques, prayer and ceremony. By working on the body internally and externally, but also working on the natural forces, internally and externally, traditional mayan healthcare is able to restore balance.

The Maya Grandmothers share their knowledge and wisdom about holistic Mayan health teachings as it is important for the tradition to survive. They do this by giving massage classes and teachings and introduce people to medicinal herbs. They will teach you to look differently at everything you encounter and explain about the importance of prayer and ceremonies.

What to expect during the festival?

On thursday in the second half of the morning the maya grandmothers will do a traditional mayan ceremony, in presence of all the visitors. Being in the presence of both Grandmothers makes you feel grounded and grateful for life. Also from tuesday to friday afternoon it is possible to book a massage from Poxita.
